Emerging Contaminants- Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)
PFAS include more than 3,000 man-made fluorinated organic compounds and are used in a wide variety of products including fire-fighting foams, textiles, carpets, paper and packaging, personal care products (e.g. shampoo, conditioners), paints, etc. Animal studies have indicated impacts on the liver, changes in hormone levels and adverse developmental outcomes. This presentation will discuss the characteristics of PFAS, health impact, regulatory status and treatment options for contaminated soil and water.
