We spent the last sixty years fighting wars and aligning ourselves with very strange bedfellows in order to assure an uninterrupted supply of oil. But oil isn’t the only natural resource that can be used as a strategic weapon. Our modern economy is dependent upon a handful of rare earth elements and China has cornered the market, providing 95% of the world’s supply. What are our options from both a policy and technical perspective?

As economic development occurs in areas of Tempe and Chandler, the demand for energy is increasing. To maintain reliable electric service, and to serve the growing employment center in the Price Road Corridor area, SRP will need to construct new 230kV overhead power lines and two new 230kV substations.
In December 2012, SRP and its consultant, ENValue LLC, began a siting study for the proposed Price Road Corridor 230kV Project (Project). Once completed, the identified route options will be included in an application to the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee (Siting Committee) for a permit to build the lines.
The Siting Committee will hold public hearings on the application and will recommend a route to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC), which ultimately will determine the location of the lines and substations.
